Inspiration – Find your Rhythm

I have a great friend who wants me to write a book.  “You always come up with so many ideas – you need to write a book for those of us who don’t have those great ideas.  I could carry them out, but coming up with them is a problem.”

Not for me.  Ideas flood into my mind like the tide coming in.  I call it a “God Breeze”.  The problem is, I have a tough time weeding out the good from the bad.  I tend to jump in and get excited about each one – how could I not?  They are all so GOOD!  At the moment.  Once I ponder a bit, I start thinking about why they wouldn’t work.  This is not a bad thing.  It forces me to evaluate and be a little more selective.  As it is, I go down many roads with great enthusiasm, and after giving it a shot, decide I can’t do yet one more thing.

My best idea time is early morning (well, early is relative).  I used to get up at 6 AM and quickly head out for my morning walk.  I tuck a post-it pad in my pocket along with a pen, my cell phone, and put my earbuds in my ears so I can listen to my “walking music”.  I start out with my meditation and gratitude affirmations.  I love this – it puts me in such a pleasant state of mind.  I find myself thinking and praying about lots of things – my kids, my business, friends, family, where I want to travel, people I want to contact, how I should build more relationships, ways of getting more business, projects I should finish, projects I should start, new ways of marketing, new markets to seek, new products I could make, then “bingo” – my latest idea!  It comes to me in a flash.  I see it in my mind’s eye, the colors, the design, the quote, all the little details.  It sinks into my brain and I plan it out in fine detail.  I quickly grab my paper and pen (while walking – careful not to trip), and jot down enough notes that I will remember it when I get home because most likely, I will have several more “flashes” along the way.

I’m now halfway through my walk and I haven’t put my music on yet.  I have, however, gotten myself jazzed up to get home and get busy.  Then the trouble starts.  I get so obsessed with whatever it is I just created in my mind – a new print, something to engrave, a memo to write to my team – whatever, that once I return, I have totally lost the focus I planned for the day and have to create this new item immediately.  It’s a blessing and a curse.

Lately I sleep a little later.  I’m not sure if I finally have gotten over “having” to get up at 6 AM, so my clock automatically opened my eyes, or if my rhythm is changing.  I sleep until I’m done.  I get up and start my routine – feed the cat, vitamins, make my iced tea, check e-mail, FB, and ETSY, then head out.  I feel guilty – like I’m doing something wrong – sleeping so late (7:20 – 8:00).  It does shift my day to a later flow.  I want to be fine with it – but I still have this nagging feeling I need to get up and get going.

Like today – it’s 9:20 and I’m still in my jammies enjoying my tea.  And blogging.  I’m going to get dressed now – and head out for my walk.  I wonder what I’ll come up with to consume me today?

Vintage Glam at Hutchinson Mall

Vintage Glam is a new gift store open in the Hutchinson Mall. Eryn Hagen is the proprietor of this new fun and funky women’s boutique that opened April 5th.

“It has always been my dream to open up my own boutique,” Hagen said last week. “I wanted a fun, funky inspiring feel to the store. Vintage Glam is a women’s boutique with a lot of great gift ideas.”

She is busy filling the store with handmade items from a variety of artists – many of whom also sell their wares on ETSY – an online handmade goods site.

I am thrilled to have my cafe-mount prints displayed in the store.  I create custom and stock digital designs and offer them as unique, affordable wall art and gifts.  Here’s one of my most popular items – DESIDERATA. This vintage 1970 prose poem tells how to live a good life.  I have sold more of these prints than anything else on ETSY.

You can see more of my work at Defying Gravity Design on Facebook – or at Vintage Glam!

Great Love II

Okay, my friend Sandy and I are Digital Design Divas.  We take inspiration from wherever we find it – quotes, nature, photos – or right out of our little right brains.  We create in our Heritage Maker’s Studio and transform our prints into beautiful works of art for your home.

This is a new print I made – actually, I just took the red one I created around Valentine’s Day and swapped in a different background. Heritage Makers is easy that way.

I then mounted this print on a 3/4″ cradled Cafe Mount made of wood.  It’s beautiful and has texture and comes ready to hang on your wall.  I’d love to make one for you – just ask.

Shopping!

Okay, not your normal girlfriend, purse, clothes, jewelry shopping.  Today I went shopping for old crap that I could “upcycle” into art to sell!  Sandy came to my house at 10 AM, and our agenda was to work on a separate blog for Defying Gravity Design.  Well, I had to take a sample engraved plate out to Clay Coyote Pottery for their open house weekend to show that I can engrave beautiful copperplate calligraphy on their pottery.  Well, that was about an hour visit, because there were so many people there that I hadn’t seen for a long time and they all wanted to know how I was doing and for me to tell them all about my new “venture” which isn’t really new, but just an evolvement of what I have done for a long, long time.  I just grow from one art medium to another and create more and more things.  I love what I do – it’s what I’ve always dreamed of.

Anyway.  From Clay Coyote, we stopped at the Antiques store in Downtown Hutchinson.  Ooh – what we found there.  Trays, books, toys, art, and ephemera that we will use in our OOAK (one of a kind) art that we have so much making.  I am going to share with you some of the treasures I found today and see if you can guess how they will be used!

Books for birdhouses!  I need to mosaic the houses first.  And add some art.  And scan the books.  Okay – up and coming.

A metal fish.  To mosaic.  Perhaps with tissue so the cool embossing shows through.  Perhaps.

A borrowed family.  Add googly eyes. Use for Halloween decor.  Bizarre, but cool.

Amazing vintage art.  To scan and use in projects.  Can’t you just see this little girl with a crown or glasses?

Chinese Checkers.  Can’t get too many of these.

Sandy says she didn’t have any green trays.  We each got 6.  New art for the center?

Lots of good stuff.  Books, Checkers, paint tin.

And a book of instructions.  Which I will not follow.

All in all, a great day.  I’m gathering supplies for those cold winter days of creativity.  So many ideas, so little time.
