Tutus, lemonade, and prints

The tutus are ready!  We’ve named them “10 Buck Tutus”!

These are just one of the items my creative family suggested to sell for our fundraiser for Nic.  We sat around my brother’s living room in Oshkosh on Memorial weekend and everyone offered ideas.  I brought to them the dilemma our family is having with Nic’s recovery from Acute Biphenotypic Leukemia in 2009.  He still has problems and is unable to work.  He is in a transition phase from sick to healthy and although we are so incredibly grateful for his healing and the support from thousands of people during his recovery, he is not well yet and there are not many options for people who are unable to work.  Especially people who aren’t eligible for much disability because they haven’t had a chance to work yet.

You can read Nic’s whole story here.

The family rallied and came up with some amazing ideas!  The kids have already had several lemonade and treat stands at garage sales.  My sister-in-law’s knitting group is selling headgear to raise money.  My nephew suggested “Lawns for Leukemia” – mowing for folks and having the proceeds go into Nic’s fund.  And then there the Give Forward Page – a place where folks can “pay it forward” with a financial gift.

We have a Facebook group, and one generous donor is giving $1 for each person who will join.

So please forward to all of your contacts – we have made $215 this way already!!

And now there are tutus!

My nieces are making cute red, white, and blue tutus and are selling them for 10 bucks each!!  100% of the profit goes to the fund.  They are adorable and made to fit most children.  You can also specifiy a waist size and we will customize.  It’s the perfect addition to your little one’s summer wardrobe!

Here’s a sneak peek at our next item – cute 6×6 plaques with a great message.  Give them to your friends, or use them as holiday, birthday or other gifts.  They are $16 each with $4 shipping.  I will give you the best shipping rate when you order multiples.

So – here are your options for helping out this great cause!

Tutus – $10 each plus $2 shipping.  Specify number and where to ship or deliver them to.

Always Remember Prints – $16 each plus $4 shipping.  Specify colors – yellow, blue, green, red, or black/brown.  Again, including shipping info.

Inspiration – Find your Rhythm

I have a great friend who wants me to write a book.  “You always come up with so many ideas – you need to write a book for those of us who don’t have those great ideas.  I could carry them out, but coming up with them is a problem.”

Not for me.  Ideas flood into my mind like the tide coming in.  I call it a “God Breeze”.  The problem is, I have a tough time weeding out the good from the bad.  I tend to jump in and get excited about each one – how could I not?  They are all so GOOD!  At the moment.  Once I ponder a bit, I start thinking about why they wouldn’t work.  This is not a bad thing.  It forces me to evaluate and be a little more selective.  As it is, I go down many roads with great enthusiasm, and after giving it a shot, decide I can’t do yet one more thing.

My best idea time is early morning (well, early is relative).  I used to get up at 6 AM and quickly head out for my morning walk.  I tuck a post-it pad in my pocket along with a pen, my cell phone, and put my earbuds in my ears so I can listen to my “walking music”.  I start out with my meditation and gratitude affirmations.  I love this – it puts me in such a pleasant state of mind.  I find myself thinking and praying about lots of things – my kids, my business, friends, family, where I want to travel, people I want to contact, how I should build more relationships, ways of getting more business, projects I should finish, projects I should start, new ways of marketing, new markets to seek, new products I could make, then “bingo” – my latest idea!  It comes to me in a flash.  I see it in my mind’s eye, the colors, the design, the quote, all the little details.  It sinks into my brain and I plan it out in fine detail.  I quickly grab my paper and pen (while walking – careful not to trip), and jot down enough notes that I will remember it when I get home because most likely, I will have several more “flashes” along the way.

I’m now halfway through my walk and I haven’t put my music on yet.  I have, however, gotten myself jazzed up to get home and get busy.  Then the trouble starts.  I get so obsessed with whatever it is I just created in my mind – a new print, something to engrave, a memo to write to my team – whatever, that once I return, I have totally lost the focus I planned for the day and have to create this new item immediately.  It’s a blessing and a curse.

Lately I sleep a little later.  I’m not sure if I finally have gotten over “having” to get up at 6 AM, so my clock automatically opened my eyes, or if my rhythm is changing.  I sleep until I’m done.  I get up and start my routine – feed the cat, vitamins, make my iced tea, check e-mail, FB, and ETSY, then head out.  I feel guilty – like I’m doing something wrong – sleeping so late (7:20 – 8:00).  It does shift my day to a later flow.  I want to be fine with it – but I still have this nagging feeling I need to get up and get going.

Like today – it’s 9:20 and I’m still in my jammies enjoying my tea.  And blogging.  I’m going to get dressed now – and head out for my walk.  I wonder what I’ll come up with to consume me today?

Vintage Glam at Hutchinson Mall

Vintage Glam is a new gift store open in the Hutchinson Mall. Eryn Hagen is the proprietor of this new fun and funky women’s boutique that opened April 5th.

“It has always been my dream to open up my own boutique,” Hagen said last week. “I wanted a fun, funky inspiring feel to the store. Vintage Glam is a women’s boutique with a lot of great gift ideas.”

She is busy filling the store with handmade items from a variety of artists – many of whom also sell their wares on ETSY – an online handmade goods site.

I am thrilled to have my cafe-mount prints displayed in the store.  I create custom and stock digital designs and offer them as unique, affordable wall art and gifts.  Here’s one of my most popular items – DESIDERATA. This vintage 1970 prose poem tells how to live a good life.  I have sold more of these prints than anything else on ETSY.

You can see more of my work at Defying Gravity Design on Facebook – or at Vintage Glam!

Two Times Tuesday

I was featured in TWO ETSY Treasuries today – I LOVE Treasuries.

Satisfy your inner curator — Treasury to the rescue! The Treasury is an ever-changing, member-curated shopping gallery of handpicked items. Members can feature their favorite items, items selected on a theme or just whatever they like. The Treasury is not intended for self-promotion, but instead to acknowledge and share the many cool things for sale on Etsy. Etsy members (artists or customers) often choose whole or partial exceptional Treasury lists to promote to the featured, handpicked items on Etsy’s home page. Treasury lists are temporary and limited in number, so there is some competition involved in creating a list of your own.

The first was is called “Blue in Minnesota” and every artist featured is a HandmadeMN member.  I just joined, so I’m so happy I was chosen!  The curator of this list is LightReading – an artist from Minneapolis.  Click here for a link to their ETSY shop!

The second treasury featured TWO of my prints – so happy!  It’s called “Therapist says Monkey Needs Motivation” – heehee.  Do Monkey Do is trying to help us all stay focused on these cold winter days – perhaps.

Anyway – fun stuff!

Here are the two listings they chose – I am so honored!
